Early morning Glen Coe and Rannoch Moor

A set of pictures taken between 7:20am and 8:20am as I set of on my journey home, allowing a rare drive along a virtually empty road.

Rannoch Moor is basically one giant peat bog surrounded by mountains and with a road going straight through the middle.

Construction of the current route was started in 1931, fully opening in 1933. To prevent the tarmac from sinking into the peat bogs, the road is laid on a massive sub-base of brushwood, heather and gravel and is effectively "floating" on the peat bog. Previously the old Military road navigate around the edge of the moor and is now used as the route for the Highlands Way long distance trail.
