A walk from Wythburn following the course of Wyth Burn into the quiet valley beneath the eastern fells, gradually climbing through rugged, open country towards Middle How. Beyond Middle How, the climb continues towards Calf Crag, where the landscape becomes increasingly exposed.
From Calf Crag, the route follows the ridge towards Steel Fell, crossing a succession of undulating slopes. The descent back towards Wythburn is steep in places, but the views across Thirlmere and towards Helvellyn provide a fitting finale to the hike.
