Wasdale day 4 - white fluffy clouds
With an original forecast of heavy rain, I had been expecting a day of rest in the van. By lunch time, the sky had cleared and a beautiful clear day emerged and it would have been criminal to not get out and about.
My original plan to climb Lingmell was scuppered by some heavy low level clouds hanging around the peaks, so I stuck with exploring the lower levels around Wastwater.

Wasdale day 3 - Styhead Tarn
Monday.
A walk along Sheepfold and up the mountain path to Styhead Tarn. I would liked to have carried on up to the top of Great Gable but I could feel my knee starting to give. Indeed, the walk back down the valley proved quite a painful trek trying to keep my leg straight and mostly failing. There were only sheep to hear me cursing.

Wasdale day 2 - Wastwater Screes
The climb up to Illgill Head was the easy bit of today's walk. Its the return journey along the shore of Wastwater that is the real challenge. Mark Richards, in his book "great mountain days in the lake district" describes this bit of the walk as follows;
"Not even Broad Crag on a bad hair day can match the sheer mind-boggling maze of minor boulder problems, which seem to accumulate one after another, constantly raising the question as to weather the path is this way or that, up or down"

Wasdale day 2 - Illgill Head & Whin Rigg
Sunday - a warm sunny but hazy day. A climb up Illgill head above the screes dropping down to Wastwater. Then a walk along to Whin Rigg before the steep descent to lakeside.

The start of my stay in Wasdale and a chance to take another look around the stunning Wastwater and its mountain backdrop. The screes on the other side drop at an angle of 45 degrees and continue to the bottom of the lake at 18m below sea level.
