Hardknott Pass is a hill pass between Eskdale and the Duddon Valley in the Lake District National Park. The tarmac-surfaced road shares the title of steepest road in England. The pass takes its name from the nearby Hard Knott fell, whose name is derived from the Old Norse harthr (hard) and knutr (craggy hill)
A road over the pass was built by the Romans around AD 110. A roman fort lies half way up the pass. Views across Eskdale towards Sca Fell and Scafell Pike. From the summit of the pass is the view across Wrynose Bottom.
