Hawes & Gayle

Hawes is a small market town and civil parish in the Richmondshire district of North YorkshireEngland, that was granted its market charter in 1699. Historically in the North Riding of Yorkshire, Hawes is located at the head of Wensleydale in the Yorkshire Dales, the River Ure runs to the north of the town. The parish of Hawes also includes the neighbouring hamlet of Gayle. The town is famous as being the home of Wensleydale cheese.

Gayle was originally a farming settlement but the population grew during the late 18th century to around 350 with employment in local quarries, coal-mining in Sleddale and in a water-driven cotton mill on Gayle Beck
