Broch of Burness & Ring of Brodgar - West Orkney Mainland

Continuing yesterdays tour of West Orkney Mainland includes stops and the Broch of Burness and the Ring of Brodgar, with views over loch of Stenness.

The Broch of Gurness is an Iron Age broch village on the northeast coast of Mainland Orkney  overlooking Eynhallow. It once housed a substantial community. At the centre of the settlement is a stone tower or broch, which once probably reached a height of around 10 metres. Its interior is divided into sections by upright slabs.

The Ring of Brodgar (or Brogar, or Ring o' Brodgar) is a Neolithic henge and stone circle about 6 miles north-east of Stromness on Mainland, the largest island in Orkney. It is the only major henge and stone circle in Britain which is an almost perfect circle. The ring originally comprised up to 60 stones, of which only 27 remained standing at the end of the 20th century.
