Torver Commons & wood - Coniston water

A walk along the shore of Coniston Water through and beyond Torver Common Wood. The woodland economy of the area goes back at least to the medieval period. The historical record for Torver specifically identifies coppice woodland and charcoal burning from the medieval period into the 20th century, alongside sites associated with iron smelting.

A coppice is an area of woodland where trees are repeatedly cut down to ground level, allowing new shoots to grow from the stumps. The resulting poles and timber were harvested on a cycle, often every few years, providing a sustainable supply of firewood, charcoal, fencing and small timber.
