Whernside

No trip to the Yorkshire dales would be complete without a hike up Whernside, the highest of the Dales 3 peaks. Its stands at 736m and allows views both across the western dales and towards the lake district.

The weather forecast for today had promised high clouds with clear sunny spells. The forecast was wrong.

As I approached the summit it was covered in cloud and I considered turning back. Fortunately I kept going and by the time I reached the top the clouds had lifted and allowed full views of the surrounding area. On the way down I looked behind me and spotted the fast approaching misty clouds returning. Yet again, I got lucky with the weather.

Ribblehead Viaduct

In the Western Dales, the iconic Ribblehead viaduct stands 50m above the valley floor and has 24 arches.
