Wester Ross road trip - part 1

Wester Ross is an area of the Northwest Highlands of Scotland in the council area of Highland. The area is loosely defined, and has never been used as a formal administrative region in its own right, but is generally regarded as lying to the west of the main watershed of Ross (the eastern part of Ross being Easter Ross), thus forming the western half of the county of Ross and Cromarty.

Wester Ross has one of the lowest population densities in Europe, with just 1.6 people per km2, who live mostly in small crofting townships along the coastline of the region. The area is renowned for the scenic splendour of its mountains and coastline.

This part of the road trip includes Gruinard Bay, Victoria falls and Glen Docherty.

Rubha nan Sasan & Loch Ewe.

Loch Ewe is a sea loch in the Wester Ross district of the Northwest Highlands of Scotland . During the Second World War, the inlet was an important assembly point for allied Northern Sea convoys towards the Soviet Union .

After the German surrender in May 1945, Loch Ewe became the British rallying point for many of the German submarines that had dropped the flag in the sea.

Today, Loch Ewe is still important to the Navy. There is a NATO supply pier near Aultbea where naval ships can pick up fuel. There is a small marine depot in Mellon Charles. Most of the buildings that were used during World War II are still there today.
