Wythburn, Valley, Calf Fell, Steel Fell

updated Sat 17th with more pictures

A walk from Wythburn following the Wythburn valley beneath the Central fells, gradually climbing through rugged country towards Middle How. Beyond Middle How, the climb continues towards Calf Crag, where the landscape becomes increasingly exposed.

From Calf Crag, the route follows the ridge towards Steel Fell, crossing a succession of undulating slopes. The descent back towards Wythburn is steep in places, but the views across Thirlmere and towards Helvellyn provide a fitting finale to the hike.

At 553 metres, Steel Fell is a distinctive summit in the Central Fells, standing between Thirlmere and Grasmere. Its broad, undulating upper slopes contrast with the steep faces that drop towards the valleys below.
