Honister to Buttermere, Via Haystacks
A hike from Honister slate mine to Buttermere via Haystacks fell.
Haystacks stands at 597 metres (1,959 feet) and is one of the Western Fells. Its appeal lies in its jumble of rocky outcrops, narrow paths, hollows and tarns. The famous fell-walker and author chose Innominate Tarn, just below the summit, as the place where he wanted his ashes scattered. His wish was carried out in 1991. Wainwright considered Haystacks his favourite fell, helping make it one of the Lake District's best-loved summits. Views extend over Buttermere, Crummock Water and Ennerdale, with the dramatic peaks of Great Gable and the surrounding Western Fells forming the skyline.
